Flathead High School’s newspaper – The Flathead Arrow – won eight top-three Class AA awards on Friday, March 31, at the University of Montana School of Journalism’s Montana Journalism Education Association annual newspaper competition. Seniors Matt Gash-Gilder and Elijah Kigilyuk each took home two awards, including first-placed awards. Gash-Gilder placed first in sports writing; Kigilyuk placed first in the student free press award. Gash-Gilder also won second place in sports photography, while Kigilyuk placed third in news photography. Senior Kaycee Smith also won two awards: second place in infographic and third place in photo illustration. Senior Zephrey Holloway won a third-place award in feature photography. And the newspaper’s web site placed third in the online pacesetter competition. The Flathead Arrow competed in 11 categories, placing in eight. The Flathead Arrow is published through the newspaper journalism class with Mr. Carl Hennell and comes out with a print edition at the end of each month.
