Course Offerings

FRENCH 1/SPANISH 1
Credit 1.0; Year; Grades 9, 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Recommended Grade “C” or better in English/Reading classes Course Objectives: This course introduces the language and culture through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In class, the language is learned through activities involving listening, interactive learning, online practice, paired partner & small groups, and language videos. The target language is reinforced through written homework exercises and studying. Culture is introduced through videos, discussion, readings, and vocabulary. Common first year topics include vocabulary and cultural information describing self, daily life, daily routine, school activities, family, clothing & shopping, weather, food, hobbies, and French/Spanish-speaking countries and cultures.

FRENCH 2/SPANISH 2
Credit 1.0; Year; Grades 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: French 1/Spanish 1 (Grade “C” or better) and/or instructor’s signature.
Course Objective: This course builds on the vocabulary and grammar skills learned in level 1. Language skills are developed through group projects, paired partner and small group activities, online activities, videos and listening to native speakers. The language is reinforced through written and spoken homework and class work activities. Culture is introduced through videos, discussion, readings and vocabulary. Common topics include travel, home life, shopping, technology, parts of a house, chores, nature & the environment, city life, weekend activities, parts of the body, health & nutrition, childhood activities, prominent target language cities, countries and regions.

FRENCH 3/SPANISH 3 
Credit 1.0; Year; Grades 11, 12 
Equipment: Bilingual dictionary. Other possible equipment needed: painting canvas, acrylic paints, brushes for art unit.
Prerequisite: French 2/Spanish 2 (Grade “C” or better) and/or instructor’s signature.
Course Objective: This course builds on the language skills learned in levels 1 and 2. Students will learn, study & practice more advanced grammar concepts enabling them to speak & write in the language beyond the basic level. Level 3 emphasizes reading, writing, conversation, and discussions. Reading a short novel and/or short stories, music, videos, listening to native speakers, paired partner and/or group activities, games, role play, oral & written exercises, and short talks are some examples of class activities. Course material may include target language history, literature and art. This course is conducted almost entirely in the target language. 

AP FRENCH/SPANISH LANGUAGE & CULTURE 
Credit 1.0; Year; Grade 12
Equipment: Bilingual dictionary. Other possible equipment needed: painting canvas, acrylic paints, brushes for art unit.
Prerequisite: French 3/Spanish 3 (Grade “C” or better) and/or instructor’s signature.
Course Objective: This course follows the AP curriculum and strives to prepare students for the AP Language Exam in May. Students read, analyze, discuss, and write about cultural and thematic themes through literature, media and linguistic interaction. Contemporary issues and current events form the basis of many discussions. Students will participate in simulated AP Exam components throughout the year and study more subtle & technical aspects of vocabulary & grammar. The target language is the exclusive language of the classroom and students are expected to comply, commit and strive for progress with this expectation.
