We the People Wins Second Straight State Title
“We The People: The Citizen and The Constitution” is a class taught by government teacher Richard Hildner that combines competition and learning. The students who enroll themselves in this class learn the ins and outs to our constitution throughout the semester. This year Glacier won the state competition and will be going to nationals for the second time. The book that each student receives at the beginning of the year is divided into six units. Each unit explores the philosophical foundations, the historical background, and the application of the U.S. Constitution today.
At the beginning of the semester the whole class goes through the book and learns about each individual unit. Towards the end of the semester the class is divided into six teams and each teams works on their three questions that pertain to the unit.
To prepare for the competition the students write a written statement that answers the questions, this statement is four minutes long followed by six minutes of cross examination by a panel of three judges. The judges that each team faces are law clerks, attorneys, previous members of the Montana Legislature; all have a background in the constitution and social sciences.
At this years state competition Glacier came out victorious by edging out Anaconda High Schools team. Seven teams were present at the competition and all fought hard but Glacier proved to be victorious and are now headed to Washington DC for the National Competition on April 23 to 26.
“We The People is a great experience to learn about politics. Going to Washington DC is going to be a fantastic experience,” Senior Juan Pablo Gevaudan said.
For the national competition the units are given three new questions, which means that there will be a lot of prepping and familiarizing themselves with new topics. “The new questions will be challenging but exciting, it provides us with more applicable knowledge and fun stuff to learn about,” Senior Shelby Deaton said.
“We The People is a great class, people should definitely take it. Mr. Hildner is the most amazing government teacher in the world,” Senior Mary Snipstead said.
“Glacier has created a new class of political elites. The new questions will be every bit as difficult but lend themselves to broader interpretation therefore the knowledge base of the students must be expanded,” Mr. Hildner said.
The We The People class this year has worked hard to ensure a win at state and that’s exactly what they did. Now the class has to work even harder to edge out the competition at Nationals. Under the guidance of Mr. Hildner that is possible.
