* A list of works cited is arranged in alphabetical order by the first word of each entry with the exception of a, an, and the. Each entry is in reverse indention.

* Some of the information needed might not be available, such as the author.
Write whatever you can find in the same order, excluding what you can’t find.

For entries with more than two authors
Example: Silverstein, Alvin, et. al.

BOOK
 
Structure: Author or Editor. Title. City/State of publication: Publishing company, Copyright date.

BOOK (Two Authors)
Example: Dolan, Edward F., and Margaret M. Scariano. Illiteracy in America.

GENERAL ENCYCLOPEDIA (World Book, Americana, etc.)
Structure: Author of article (listed in small letters at the end of each article). “Title of the
article.” Name of encyclopedia. Edition (year).
Example: Payne, Stanley G.  “Spain.”  World Book Encyclopedia. 2006 ed.
 
     
MULTI-VOLUME WORK (Specialized sets: science, health, animals, biography, etc.)
Structure: Editor or author. Title. Volume used. City/State of publication:
Publisher, Copyright date.
Example: Kane, William M.,ed. Health Matters. Volume 1.
Danbury, Connecticut: Grolier, 2002.
 
     
MAGAZINE    
Structure: Author. “Title of article.” Name of magazine Date of magazine: Pages.
(If the article is not printed on consecutive pages,
write only the first page number and a plus sign).
Example: Stern, Linda. “A Survival Guide.” Newsweek 1 May, 2000:
74-76.
 
     
NEWSPAPER    
Structure: Author. “Title of article.” Name of newspaper Date: pages.

PAMPHLET - IF an author is listed for the pamphlet, place it before the title.
Structure: Title. Place of publication: Publisher, Copyright date.
Example: Safety in the Home. Seattle: American Red Cross, 2005.
 
     
SIRS ARTICLE    
Structure: Author. “Title of article.” Name of Publication. Copyright date: pages. Source,
year. Title of binder. Article number.
Example: Ragavan, Chitra. “Fixing the FBI.” U.S. News & World Report. 28 March
2005: 18+. SIRS, 2006. Global Issues. #31.
     
     
NON-PRINT SOURCE EXAMPLES
AUDIO-VISUAL (videocassette, DVD, CD-ROM, etc.)
Structure: Title. Director or other pertinent data such as writer,  
performers, and producer. Format (DVD, CD-ROM, etc.). Distributor. Year of release.
Example: It’s a Wonderful Life. Dir. Frank Capra. Perf. James Stewart, Donna Reed and
    Lionel Barrymore. DVD. Republic, 1946.
 
 
E-MAIL MESSAGE
Structure: Writer. “Title of message (taken from the subject line).” E-mail to person’s
name. Date of the message.
Example: Frank, Norman. “Re: Questions about Animal Shelter.” E-mail to Amy Sands.
26 May 2000.
     
INTERNET WEBSITE - If you cannot find some of this information, cite what is available.
Structure: Title of page. Name of the author or editor of site, if given. Date of posting/revision, if given.
Name of any sponsoring institution or organization <URL>.

INTERNET-IMAGE, SOUND, OR VIDEO CLIP
Structure: Producer, artists, or photographer, if given. “Description or title.” Date of
image, sound, or video clip, if given. Description of Medium. (online image, video clip, etc.).
Title of page. Date of download (when you got it) <URL>.
Example: Wilkinson, Mary. “Sea Turtles.” 3 March 1997. Online image. The Wild Ones Animal

INTERVIEW    
Structure: Name of the person interviewed. Kind of interview (Personal interview,
Telephone interview). Date.
Example: Midas, Davis. Personal interview. 24 May 2000.
 
     
SOUND RECORDING (Compact Disc, LP, or audiocassette)
Structure: Artist / Group. “Title of song.” Title of album. Manufacturer’s name, date.

Structure: Author of article. “Title of article.” Name of magazine Date of
