Kalispell Middle School
We are about to start another memorable year for the KMS Jazz Band. This group has a long history of excellence, fun and great music.
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:20 a.m. to 7:55 a.m.
The KMS Jazz Band performs at least three evening concerts per year, as well as the Kiwanis Jazz Festival held this year in Columbia Falls. We also perform often during the school day, at lunches, staff meetings, and other events.
- Be present and on time to all rehearsals. Jazz Band is usually “one to a part”. If you’re not at rehearsal, the group misses out on your contribution. You are permitted two (2) absences per trimester. Exceeding this limit will result in a) loss of Enrichment credit, and/or b) removal from group.
- Be attentive and make positive contributions. Our rehearsal time is brief, and every minute counts.
- Learn your music early and completely. We will be building a large working repertoire, or “set list”. Make sure you can play every note on every page of your music.
- Listen to and build a library of great jazz music performed on your instrument. Jazz is its own language, passed down from generation to generation. The best way to learn this language is by listening to it.
The KMS Jazz Band is open to 7th and 8th grade musicians of high quality and responsibility. You need to be in good academic standing (no “1s” or “0s” in Work Ethic). Currently the jazz band has openings in the saxophone, trombone, trumpet and rhythm sections. “Non-traditional” instruments, (flute, clarinet, violin, etc.) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
